Supporting Children

Following this role she worked as a learning support assistant at an all-boys school in Sunderland. She supported children aged 11-16 years diagnosed with Autism Spectrum disorders and Sensory processing difficulties to access their education. She supported the development of their fine motor skills, handwriting, visual perception, working with education staff to build successful activity programmes and groups within the school.

Some groups including a developing handwriting skills group that is still in place today. She also provided training sessions for education staff from an Occupational Therapy point of view on managing sensory processing difficulties.

Paediatric Occupational Therapist

Whilst she was working at the school Jen was appointed as a band 5 paediatric occupational therapist within the NHS in Bedfordshire. It was here that she developed her assessment skills and knowledge in specialist seating, standardised and non-standardised assessments, working within a special school and report writing skills for children with a variety of disabilities and needs. Surrounded by a supportive team she was able to progress to a band 6 Specialist Paediatric Occupational Therapist position within the team and took on additional responsibilities including overseeing a special school and becoming an OT student educator as well as continuing to develop core skills and knowledge in assessment and intervention.

Jen quickly progressed through the banding and has recently worked within Hertfordshire as a Highly Specialist Children’s Occupational Therapist, leading within a local primary age special school supporting other members of Occupational therapy staff to provide provision with regards to EHCP, equipment, assessment, staff training and liaising and communicating with parents and other professionals whilst continuing to provide community assessments and home assessments for minor adaptations. She has helped to develop the service through the transition to a three tier service including developing drop in clinics, sensory awareness courses and developing masterclasses in cerebral palsy and preparing children for school transitions.
